STUDIO FOR TEXTILE MAKERS

by Karolina Szymczak

The main assumption of the project was to create a building that clearly marks its presence in the central street of Bethnal Green at any time. During the day, the classic brick blocks fit into the surrounding buildings. Industrial windows are able to move the viewer to an 18th-century textile workshop. The heart of the building is the transparent staircase, which allows during the day to visit the public part of the building and see beautiful classic looms without disturbing the professionals working there. At night, when the work on textiles comes to an end, the staircase is lit up with colors. The light shines forth from the interior of the building intertwining with each other. As a result, light creates patterns, which are similar to those on textiles that are created daily in the interior of this building.
