THE INVERTED CITY

by Varsha Raji

The Inverted City is enveloped into the skin and edge condition of the existing urban fabric to provide hidden collective living spaces and trading units for the itinerant vendors to serve as a relief from the City of Chaos. This new collective space of comfort and relief is provided using the ‘cutting and inserting’ strategy in which these pockets of Oasis are on various locations within the City. The proposed inventions offer new typology for a collective refuge by engaging with the social and spatial realities of the context and aims to bring to the surface the needs of an absent community of the street vendors, which have been excluded.
