HOUSE FOR A MUDLARKER

by Gregory Brookhouse

The concept behind the house is inspired by large industrial structures I found along the Thames foreshore whilst mud larking. The huge dank dark structures hovering over the foreshore created a sense of wonder and curiosity which resonated with mudlarking. The form is a ‘Land Pier’ hovering into Bethnal Green, the bottom steps represent the foreshore or beach, creating a public space for people to gather or host events. As you climb up the foreshore you pass the collection into the pier which cantilevers above, this large space is designed to be flexible. The space creates a hub for mudlarkers to gather and share finds and stories with each other and the public or host events. The living area is at the back blending public and private.
