THE CREATIVE ACT: A DUCHAMP'IAN ART INSTITUTE

by Laura Kershaw

Encouraging creative play, the art of chess, and the importance of learning through perspective. These are the core factors of the institution, focusing on the practice of art, performance, and music. A concept derived from my body agent analysis; a physical representation of the emotional understanding of Marcel Duchamp's 'Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2'. The pride of his owner, the turmoil and anger of being constrained to the painting for over a hundred years, juxtaposed by the information gathered throughout his lifetime being trapped within the various art galleries. My journey with 'Nu', allowed me to utilise his geometry to form the structural components of the institute, relevant to Duchamp's interest with chance as an art form, then using Nu's observations to design an art institute which both Duchamp and himself would desire to have in contemporary society. “I don't believe in art. I believe in artists.” ? Marcel Duchamp
