YI CHUL HEE'S SCULPTOR STUDIO

by Sude Yilmaz

Designing a home, workspace and exhibition space for Yi Chul Hee led me to focus on light/shadow and space during my project. The main concept concentrated on mimicking my sculptor’s material (aluminium pipes) to control the visibility looking into the building. This was achieved through the use of two curtain-like facades made up of pipes at various lengths. The more coverage the pipes had against the windows, the fewer people saw of Mr Yi’s work. This would encourage people to move along the building where the inside is more exposed or to visit his exhibitions held at the park in the area right across his workspace. Due to Yi Chul Hee’s living quarters taking place on the upper two floors, the second curtain and interior curtain of pipes ensure his privacy is not disturbed. The final design proposal demonstrates strongly the unique qualities of my client and his work.
