CHILDREN IN THE CITY

by Kamilya Kelbuganova

The task was to design a nursery based on a specific learning pedagogy., and the Montessori pedagogy, which is centred on the independence of a child and treating them in a holistically, is what inspired my design. The project started off with research to look at how Montessori nurseries work in real life and what aspects they include. I followed with looking at classroom layouts, furniture and concept models. In the process of making concept models I designed a Montessori box- a piece of furniture that would allow children to foster their independence and creativity (the boxes can be arranged in any way forming furniture like chairs, stairs and tables). Later, the idea of a Montessori box contributed to the design of the building element and the overall design of the façade. Montessori pedagogy uses a lot of natural and sustainable materials, so the whole building was made of cork.
