THE HOUSE & PUBLIC INTERFACE OF A DELTIOLOGIST

by Elifnur Ulucay

This project involves designing a home for my client, a collector of postcards and his wife, whilst integrating an element of interaction between the public and the postcards. I have designed the building to be split into two sections with the home being a tall narrow section and the public interface functioning as a rentable workspace for local people that generally have to travel outside of Bethnal green to rent office space. The postcards functions as dividing screens, across both buildings, taking inspiration from shoji screens in Japanese architecture which allows for the spaces to be variable. The idea of having variable space links hand in hand with having private, semi-private and public spaces which is represented though the buildings materiality in alabaster stone. Throughout the day having a monolithic appearance where all the spaces are unified, and at night having different volumes of light from each space suggesting different levels of privacy.
