TOWER OF LIGHT

by Valentin Hristov

This building focuses on teaching children about how natural light can be a substitute for artificial light, by using light pipes coming from a high central tower to spread natural light throughout the building, which is shaded from the sun for most of the year. The central tower is the main circulation space of the building, and is the only way to reach the rooms on the other floors. This tower also acts as an atrium to allow for extra light to penetrate the building, and also optimises natural ventilation, allowing for hot air to dissipate up through the tower. The different spaces are cylindrical in shape and are arranged around the central tower. The building is constructed primarily from these light pipes, which are different colours to create different atmospheres within the building, this helps the children to notice that the atmosphere changes, and makes them question how.
