BUG'S LIFE

by Lisa Gronevik

Bug's Life is a floating settlement which aspires to form new relationships between residents, the environment and ecology. According to the UN, the food industry will need to double its production in order to support 10 billion people by 2050. As a result, it is anticipated that insects will become part of our everyday diets. Rather than introducing this as a large-scale industrial process, Bug's Life explores how insects can become part of a sustainable circular economy. The aim is to challenge the negative perceptions of insects, and instead celebrate the ecological, cultural and nutritional value. This concept comes together in a floating modular structure, which can be towed anywhere along the Thames to a location where there is a demand for housing, pollinators or an urban food system. The project also intends to mimic and conserve nearby ecological and biodiverse habitats, which are currently under threat by proposed developments.
