PHILOXENIA - ATHENS REFUGEE SHELTER

by Markos Stergios

More than 42,000 refugees are estimated to be on the Aegean islands. Unable to leave due to a containment policy determined by the EU, they are forced to remain on the islands until their asylum requests are processed by a system both understaffed and overstretched.

Greece needs a scheme which will help to decongest the islands which now hold up to 6 times more refugees as originally designed.

Philoxenia Shelters in Athens will be part of the Piraeus Port Masterplan.
The project will be challenging the shipping industry and its enormous waste in 3 ways. Utilising old shipping containers, pallets and also wax, a derivative of the oil companies around the port. Situated within the port, the project ensures time efficiency, minimum transportation and also waste. The design is modular and can be expanded according to the scheme's needs and also the availability of the materials within the port.
