UNISON: FISH & CHIPS, COMMUNITY AND FUN

by Gabriela MacAllister

Kent Adult Education is opening a new site in Margate, along the seafront. They are looking to provide a space for the locals, where everyone feels welcome: a Fish and Chip shop. This informal space is also an adult training centre where workshops and community activities take place. The proposal is a space that enables social cohesion through the use of key views representative of the community and eating as a social activity, as catalysts for unity. This concept drives the proposal from the shape of tables, to programme, to the structure itself. One of Margate's most important challenges are low education and low income, which has in turn created a lack of trust of individuals on their community. This proposal aims at restoring this trust of people in the community through carefully designed architecture.
