MARGATE COMMUNITY SCHOOL

by Gabriela Mac Allister

According to the 2011 Census, Margate has one of the lowest education rates in the UK. The population, generally, have no qualifications (including GCSEs). A study by the Turner Contemporary and the Canterbury Christ Church suggests that due to these issues the quality of life and hopes for the future of the people of Margate has been affected. This architectural proposal for Margate Community School aims at improving young people's employability and hopes for the future by providing a variety of skills through metalworking. The proposal is an alternative educational building typology that actively includes public space within the school's facilities in order to create a stronger relationship between the community and the students. Students are encouraged to start their own businesses and learn important career and life skills. This concept derives from the combination of the Montessori and Margret Rasfeld ideologies for education and is represented as an architectural proposal.
