HAPPY TOGETHER

by Barbara Cellario

The Edward Street project works on the basis of creating a stronger community within New Cross through architectural devices. Building three parallel realms in which different kinds of people (public, residents, and families) can evolve both together and apart. Through vertical hierarchy, the public is always set further away from the residents. Based around co-living, the new spaces defined by a podium on which rests the housing development, offer new opportunities for the community to interact with the architecture and with each other. The residents’ life and activities almost becomes a real-life play that is there for the public to admire from afar, but not directly be a part of. Similarly, my semester 1 project, set in Beijing, works on an urban level to create an increased level of privacy for the residents, this time working concentrically instead of vertically.
