THE WATER CYCLE SCHOOL

by Lucie Barnes

The water cycle school is designed to imitate the typical mountain to coast landscape depicted in the water cycle diagram we’re taught in schools. The aim is to teach the students at the school about local environmental issues in London through the architecture of their school, the main issue being flood risks. The design of the school maximises water harvesting with numerous features to manage rainwater and stormwater run off. The architecture teaches the young children effective methods of harvesting water that they can take and utilise in their futures. As the children progress through the school, they climb the water cycle scape, each key area represents a different point along the water cycle. The children start off in the coastal themed nursery, travel up through the rivers and marshes, then the highlands to the mountain top in year 6.
