THE ALGAE FACTORY

by Wiame Azzouzi

Harnessing the world’s natural resources to their fullest potential is a key to unlocking a brighter future. As such, my building aims to grow algae, extract biofuel and distribute sustainable energy to the houseboats in the navigation canal as well that the marina near Walthamstow Wetlands. Located between two streams of the River Lea, the Algae Factory aims to portray convenience and interdependance with the ecology. Studies beginning in the 1950s and on through the ‘80s-’90s led to the discovery that algae had unique properties that made it a remarkable new type of clean energy. It can be grown almost anywhere as long as the proper conditions are created. Algae uses water that is not suited for regular crops and facilities can be built on any type of land, making it easy for farmers to farm algae in areas where traditional crops would not do well.
