THE ANTARCTIC TREASURY

by Hardik Patel

Located on the Ronne Ice shelf of Antarctica, the treasury seeks to become a collection of life, stored as DNA, in the physicality of an ice core. The larger programme of the scheme works around how a self sustaining base could reside on the shelf, from generating energy, importing and exporting goods, repairing of the ice shelf and how a human presence can be accommodated.

The programme largely facilitates itself around the harshness of its environment. Strong winds and freezing temperatures shape the design of the stations dwellings. Robotic rovers similar to NASAs Mars Rovers, perform the large task of drilling and storing the DNA within the ice shelf. The station located within this remote part of the world, endeavours to push the limits to sustain life on Earth.
