THE THAMES OYSTER FARM

by Nic Chapman

It is the intention of the Thames Oyster Farm to help rebuild the dwindling existence of oysters in the River through careful reintroduction and breeding. The farms will bring fresh oysters to the directly to the capital and with it a renewed sense of cultural heritage. Through construction of floating houses situated around the farms, a new community will grow, focused around the farming and culture of oysters. The project will engage with the TE2100 plan to help prepare for predicted rising water levels in the future through the construction of a river dike. This will defend the surrounding areas around the site from flood damage and also house the means of processing and transporting the oysters. Throughout project, the oyster farms will always consider how they can help reduce its footprint by keeping waste to a minimum and keep recycling and re-purposing at the forefront of its mentality.
