THE FREE STATE OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT

by Eliot Ellis-Brown

Imagining the future state of the UK now that the country has left the European Union, the Isle of Wight offers a unique opportunity to become a ‘threshold’ to the country as well as to the rest of the world. By exaggerating its isolation as an island, I will promote the Isle of Wight through the notion of an unconventional airport – a utopian ideal resilient to the disregard and destructiveness of mankind.

I will re-imagine the Isle of Wight as a ‘free state’, initially providing a midway point between the UK and the EU but eventually transforming the island into an ‘oasis’ for those in search of temporary escapism. Through a transient landscape I will offer permanence and security in the form of social services such as advancements in sustainable energy generation, education and transport networks, allowing for an enhanced way of life for local residents. This will ensure temporary visitation is not only sensitive to the surrounding environment but encourages the growth of native wildlife.
