THE ON-OFF SHORE COMMUNITY

by Shaun Taylor

The project is situated in a near-future scenario where fracking has become a widespread practice across the UK, specifically Hull. It attempts to persuade enterprising oil companies (that have a conscience) to undertake fracking in a better way. The project draws upon nineteenth century industrial communities attempting to improve conditions of workers and address some of the inequities of industrialisation while at the same time embracing factory production as a contemporary reality. The project not only looks to provide a community, it also looks to be regenerative particularly with regards to the environment and energy production. Fracking only plays an initial role providing funding for the construction of the project along with offering initial jobs harvesting crude oil and gas. The long-term aim of the project is to wholly rely on sustainably generated energy by weaning off the reliance of fossil fuels to a more circular and sustainable way of living.
