OBSCURA GARDENS & STOLEN SPACE THEATRE

by Daniel Smith

Inspired by the film Les Misérables 2019, Stolen Space Theatre (Osborn Street, Whitechapel) and Obscura Gardens (Robin Hood Gardens, Poplar) have been informed by a process which focuses on casting positive/negative space in each site’s history and intersecting it with architectural casts and experiences from the film. In both projects a landscape is generated through this process. Within these inhabited landscapes the camera obscura has been used so an audience experiences the outside inside through the projection/surveillance of natural light. The surrounding audience, everchanging city and nature become part of the performance as the watcher becomes the watched.
