UBUNTU - A STUDIO FOR SHARED CULTURE

by Ross Coronia

My client's name is Sopheap Pich, a Cambodian contemporary sculptor that uses rattan as his main material. The main focus of the project is to both cater and meet the needs of both Sopheap Pich and the people of Peckham. I designed a structure that invites the residents of Peckham to experience making rattan, access artworks of local artists and enjoy the 1st floor and roof gardens. In addition, for future collaboration with artists that are interested with learning rattan or developing long-term projects there is an extra residential floor that provides the basic daily living necessities. Moreover, the exterior part of the building is designed to show the artist’s style and metaphorically show the ideals and movements he supports and celebrates with his sculptures such as: environmentalism, immigrancy and minimalism.
