THE DIALECTIC OF COLLECTIVE MEMORY - LONDON BETWEEN REMEMBERING AND FORGETTING

by Soumaya Abdallah

Initially, this project investigates how the urban environment is represented by the way it been perceived constructed and used by people. As this presentation evolves with time and articulates the changing images of the city and its spaces from the historical spaces to the modern spaces. This project aims to reveal the city’s own language through which it speaks to its people. This has a bearing on the way people live, perceive, and experience the city. As this language is what translates into the collective memory of the city - this project first applies its research methodology to investigate layers of the city offering a collective perspective of London. Thus, it takes a segment of this city revealing its collective memory and searches the physcliaity of it, followed by an intervention that applies the understanding of collective memory in spaces that evolves around the city.
