URBAN OPTIMISATION TO ACHIEVE CARBON NEUTRAL RESIDENTIAL BLOCK IN ATHENS 2050

by Eleni Maragkaki

The extensive urbanisation of Athens’ city centre has left a degraded urban environment. The city’s density and lack of vegetation increase the impact of Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) to the energy consumption and the indoor and outdoor comfort of the citizens. The mean heat island intensity exceeds 10ºC in the city centre. The average energy consumption of a household in Greece is 13.994 kWh per year. The aim of this work is the urban optimisation of one of the city’s blocks in order to achieve a net zero carbon neighbourhood in Athens 2050.
