THE CITY'S NEW GARDEN

by Sude Yilmaz

This proposal aimed to bring together multigenerational families, whose relationship with nature and the outdoor had been damaged through decades of unbridled urbanisation and familial fragmentation. The project draws inspiration from traditional ideas of human’s harmonious relationship with nature as expressed in scholarly gardens and rural landscapes. In the post-pandemic world, it is all the more urgent to realise the critical importance of outdoor amenities to our wellbeing, in a city where there are few public spaces. In contrast to the imperial gardens and the formal ceremonial public spaces, this is the city's new garden for the ordinary citizens of Beijing.
