RETROFITTING AND REGENERATING THE MOORINGS ESTATE - THAMESMEAD SE28

by Emanuele De Angelis

The Moorings Estate is a large social housing complex developed during Stage 3 of the Thamesmead plan in the 70s. More than 50 years have passed and what aimed to be a wealthy migration of the white class into the new suburban areas has raised socio-economic issues generated by bad planning and inadequate urban design strategies. The unique character of the area has to be preserved and reconsidered. Therefore, this master plan aimed to solve urban issues encountered during site vision: bus stops are not accessible and vacant underused spaces in front of the estate make the area very deprived. However, opportunities are coming up through the master plan that will be generating new developments, unlocking the connection West-East, boosting the local economy and enhancing the public realm.
