THE MUSH ROOMS

by Qubbie Yuan

In this semester, a gigantic architecture is designed along with experiments on mycelium and the making of mycelium SIP frames (i.e., doubly curved plywood surface, dowel system, wood shingles, etc.) This studio projects will solve the issues of under-supply of housing and job opportunities as the negotiation between the redevelopment committee and Car Giant (major private landowner of redevelopment area) collapsed. I chose the Old Oak Common Depot as my project site. It is currently under construction in order to turn into an important station for the High-Speed Train Development Scheme in the UK. The scheme is going to turn the industrial area into a modern superhub which is going to change the district vigorously. In this project, an organic form of clusters of residential blocks are being introduced to the site. The structure is composed of timbers as well as SIPs that made up of mycelium. It aims to provide residential units with the concept of Passivhaus. On the other hand, there will be a mycelium factory locates above the original railway tracks next to the Old Oak Common Depot.
