REGENERATIVE TERRACED HOUSING

by Karolina Kownacka

In Beijing children below 3 do not enjoy state child care, meaning the elderly grand-parents are relied on to look after the young. They are caught in a paradox of cul-tural taboo associated with moving into a care home, and lack of space and care in case of living with their family. Growing children, who are becoming young graduates are seeking independence from their family home and are moving into substandard housing. This project seeks to create a street-based, low rise and high-density dwelling type that takes inspiration from the Shanghai terrace and its ability to accommodate multiple occupancies. The evolved terrace is a response to the families lifecycle; from a 2 person family (mother and father) to a 5+ people family (Mother, Father, Son, Daughter, Grandparent(s). It also challenges the need for independence of growing children and/or parents.
