THE NOMADIC JOURNEY THROUGH GREAT PORTLAND STREET AND THE SELF-SUSTAINING THEATRE

The Nomadic Journey through Great Portland Street references the idea of Situationists spaces especially, the action of jumping from one landmark to another and from one scene to another. Through these studies and the film Howl's Moving Castle, the site of Great Portland Street Station becomes the project’s Gatehouse. The notion of staging and stage-sets are key components with the development of Proscenium studies used to frame material, ephemeral, history and current components of the site. The subsequent proposal, The Self-Sustaining Theatre is built by and for the community, driven and inspired by local theatre groups. Self-sustaining through recycling are key concepts and theatre props are constructed from recycled cardboard collected in the vicinity. The programme includes four theatres, an artist residency and a recycling centre. The early proscenium studies are reflected through a sequence of adjustments that change for different performances. These include the main proscenium on stage and one that frames the Station. Most importantly, the framing of the in-between spaces celebrates the public aspects of circulation from the existing Station to the new courtyard and landscaping around the Theatre.
