THE BAMBOO LOOP

by Ashleigh Gill

The 'Bamboo Loop' consists of two pedestrian bridges linked by two paths sited along the Regent's Canal. Influenced by projects from Bali to France the bridges are designed to champion sustainable development and are made from bamboo that can be grown on site. Bamboo is a strong building material that is simple to work with and can reduce the embodied carbon of a project. During its growth phase bamboo absorbs carbon and if grown on site it can reduce delivery traffic to site during construction. The local community can be involved from the beginning by helping to grow and harvest the bamboo. The path focuses on inclusivity, opportunities for people to connect and encourages active travel. Designed for accessibility, it is clearly marked with quiet and active zones, sheltered seating and planting for the senses with areas for performance, for exercise, quiet places to rest and spaces to meet. Calm routes have been established between the four nearest main overland train stations to the Bamboo Loop and these also feature benches, planting, pedestrian crossings and clear signage. The Bamboo Loop can be enjoyed by everyone, from the very young to the very old, the passing visitor to the local resident.
