REGENERATION AND DEVELOPMENT

by Mahdis Hosseini

The East London borough of Newham was chosen as the case study for the Year 2 studio 2021/21. Newham is one of London's most diverse boroughs, with a high level of social deprivation. The COVID pandemic has exacerbated these issues as well. Newham, on the other hand, is committed to a number of innovative and promising local government experiences. It is experimenting with the council's first permanent Citizens Assembly, which is one of the most innovative 'participatory democracy' processes in the UK. Residents' perspectives, including those of the youth who participated in the Citizens Assembly, have already been incorporated into the Borough's Climate Emergency Action Plan, and a series of recommendations on the topic of 'Greening the Borough' has recently been published. The Council is currently working on an action plan that will encourage physical and digital access to green space, implement community projects focused on green space and wellbeing, and support the development of green infrastructure networks, pockets of green, and the re-wilding of existing areas.
