This project seeks to address the urban alienation and loneliness suffered by visiting grandparents of families who have made Beijing their home. Whereas in their native or historic homes there were ample outdoor spaces to create a sense of community, they are individuals who are called to Beijing as primary care givers to grandchildren, without the social infrastructure to support a rich and active life. A hybrid of inverted London terrace and connected Beijing courtyards seeks to address this issue by creating a connected enclave of outdoor and indoor spaces for the elderly to form their own community and be in control of their own lives.
