BUILDING ON ADOLESCENCE - THE SKATE ACADEMY

by Ryan Kyberd

DS25 focuses on the use of a physical body_a body agent_as a catalyst for the development of architectural interjections. This project exists within the metaphor that speculates what would happen if a building could reproduce like a human. The narrative speaks of a teenager, born as a baby building from its parents, the Shard and One Canada Square, into a new suburban context where it interacts with its surroundings forming a new archetype in an East London park. In 2014 London’s first skatepark was awarded listed status. This project suggests what will happen once sites this become difficult for the skyscraper culture that is brewing in East London. The inherited patterns of demolish and unroot may no longer occur. The genetic building material may morph and adapt to other uses and change its phenotype appearance. It might rebel against its parents logic and stand as it own architecture.
