INFLATABLE FESTIVAL OF THE ROMAN LONDON WALL

by Shing Ma

This project aims to explore the application of inflatables in temporary structures and architecture. The combination of the two was explored since the 50s with some interesting outcome; in contrast to many traditional building materials, they are lightweight, can be disassembled and reused. Air components can be used as structures, facade, installations, controlling movements for environment control and other functions; they are demonstrated in this project.
With the 1800 years celebration of the construction of the London city wall, this project explores the contrasting elements between the ancient solid stone wall embedded with history; and contemporary lightweight translucent inflatables which left no marks once disassembled.
The programme is to connect the communities along the old wall, creating a series of temporary structures and arches, attracting locals and visitors to walk along the path with different events.
