SEAWATER FARM VILLAGE

by Yagmur Sil

Agricultural consumption takes 70% of the current water reserves, therefore sustainable farming methods will need to be addressed. Seawater farmhouses proposes a self-sufficient harbour village in Istanbul, Turkey. The scheme incorporates seawater desalination for supplying fresh water to dwellings with integrated vertical farms and greenhouses. The produced by-product brine from desalination will also present opportunities in fish farming and agriculture. As the reject brine will be used for aquaculture, increasing fish biomass and to irrigate salt-tolerant plant species. The seawater farmhouses take advantage of the wind and solar gain to utilize its energy. The desalination process incorporates evaporation and condensation through a series of vertically stacked pipes used in the design to convert sea water into fresh water.
