TILBURY LIDO

by Olivia Britten

Tilbury Lido is an expansive vertical live/ work settlement that encourages creative industry to flourish in the area. The housing encourages the notion of self-build whereby residents are provided with a serviced ‘pod’ set within a 4m x 9m plot with space for alteration and extension; allowing the creativity of residents to configure and adapt their homes to their personal needs and desires affordably. The lido charges a daily rate for visitors and thus generates profits to subsidise the cost of building materials for residents. There are communal material storage and building warehouses which are equipped with CNC machines to trim and cut the housing modules to size. These modules are made from CNC potato chipboard from Smart Spud Living and sustainably sourced plywood - trimmed to compact modules that a single person may carry to build with. Food self-sufficiency is encouraged with designated allotments on the roof of the structure with communal tool sheds. Furthermore, there are integrated planting beds throughout the ramp structure to ensure plenty of farm space for each plot.
