A LANTERN MAKER'S RESIDENCE

by Milan Lad

A lantern making residence with a public gallery situated in Bethnal Green. The idea was to showcase the inside features from the exterior and this has been achieved by a concrete and glass divide. The concrete hiding the private spaces and the glass exposing the conveyor belt in the public gallery. A grand, double-height ceiling over the public entrance creates a daunting, but captivating space. With the addition of the conveyor belt and display feature in the stairs, the entrance into the building for public visitors is dramatic. There are two floors of exhibition space which showcases the work of the three residents. The three workers have a private entrance and their living space is on the highest level towards the south side where noise pollution is low. The windows on the east elevation separate the two spaces, however the conveyor belt which it exposes, connects them.
