DESIGNER RESIDENCE

by Arjun Bansal

An akari lamp workshop located in Bethnal Green gives access to local communities to experience the Japanese heritage of lamp making. This project is based on 3 workers who will be living and creating akari lamps while the main designer is visiting. The overall building has 4 different floors starting with the workspace, exhibition area, gallery space and then finishing off with the residential space. Using my designer’s inspiration “Carlo Molino”, I created these circular openings scattered throughout the curved façade. The façade of the building is covered by a glass box with wire mesh in-between at the very top. The workers will forge professionally created lamps ranging from small to gigantic. This will then dangle on a huge strip of mesh on the façade on the third floor using fishing rods. This ultimately creates a grand view from both the entrance of the building and outside across the street.
