THE HOUSE & GALLERY OF A TAPE MEASURE COLLECTOR

by Oliwia Biesiaga

Designing a house with the function of being a private space as well as a public space was the key idea for this project. A tape measure is a unique object to collect, therefore before starting the design process I begun by experimenting with the ways it could be displayed and used in the house/gallery. I took inspiration from the objects and subtly incorporated it’s features in the design, this is through creating cantilevering floors, using spiral stair cases, using spiral display cabinets and creating a weaves facade and a weaved entrance tube to the gallery, inspired by the materiality of the tape measure. In the gallery spaces there is a room with expensive tape measures. The next room with tape measures hanging from the ceiling and walls creates a dramatic effect which is furthermore emphasised with colourful lighting. Lastly, tape measures imprinted on the pavement surrounding the building invite you into these gallery spaces.
