EXHIBITING, WORKING AND LIVING ON PLATFORMS - A HOME FOR ALBERTO GIACOMETTI

by Feriel Siad

The design of Giacometti’s home intended to ease his working habits by creating a spacious and practical environment. The design stemmed from the concept of various levels, catered to Giacometti’s ergonomics, that would assist him in reaching his tall sculptures. As a result, it would not be necessary to introduce extra furniture that would clutter the space. The design also ensures that there is sufficient lighting throughout the day for him to paint and sculpt, due to its south-facing orientation and staggered windows that look out onto the nearby park and also complement the interior language. The language of staggered platforms continues throughout both the exclusive exhibition space as well as the living area, and are connected by a series of steps and staircases. The materiality of the building (concrete), was chosen to be sturdy enough to withstand heavy loads whilst also resembling the texture of Giacometti’s work.
