THE INSTITUTION OF SUSTAINABILITY

by Aleyna Pekshen

My design studio project explored the Haberdashers Company's introduction of the benefits of sewing and sustainable materials to the youth of Bethnal Green with The Children's Museum of Green Sewing. The project is presented through a 4 level, public and private building that is shaped by the 5 fundamental programs for the owners of the Haberdashers Company: Sustainable Materials Shop, Museum, Cafe, Observatory and Accommodation. Horizontal timber cladding surrounds all visible surfaces and darkens in colour with each level. This change in tint provides fluidity for a fully linear facade whilst clearly but smoothly differentiating the programs that live in each level for the outside eye. Privacy is provided for the residential floors through the timber cladding that wraps the entire facade of the third floor, including the awning windows.
