BERTOIA: THE METALWORKER

by Gabriella Wells

Beginning with Harry Bertoia’s Diamond chair, this project explores the life’s work of the designer. From the jewellery created at the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, to the sculptures created whilst in California working for the Eames’, the furniture created at Knoll, and the Sonambient sculptures created in his barn in Pennsylvania. The aim of the exhibition is to emphasise the change in scale throughout his work by creating an interesting tension with the space; the jewellery is in a huge space, the Sonambients in a tight space. It also reflects Bertoia’s inspiration behind his work: the natural world.
