MODERN BINDERY

by George Darlington

My project brief was to design a building for a Bookbinder in Bethnal Green. The idea is having a large uninterrupted workshop full of natural light to handle group bookbinding classes and other similar activities. The building requires storage space for all different materials and equipment. But also basic living quarters for 1-2 people. The design and materiality of the project was greatly influenced by its location and purpose. The main principle is to advertise the business through its architecture. The Building is composed of a skeletal structure made of wooden columns on the right and left facades. Connected to one another by a intertwining curved beam grid shell roof made of glulam wood. The skeletal structure allows for a front and back glass curtain wall optimising light and vision in and out of the building. The work taking place inside would be perceivable from anyone walking or driving by.
