SELF RELIANT COMMUNE: A NEW EYE TO THE INVISIBLE MAJULI ISLAND

by Shubham Lohe

My research is exploring the communities in the Majuli Island, Assam, India that are facing the issues of flooding and land erosion resulting in the loss of life and culture of the island. I would be looking at flooding instead of it being a cause of fear and escapism which is going to become a form of power and economy. I would be building all the cultural invisible practises to see how they become key components in making my architecture. I will be creating a factor of stability by taking advantage of climate and cultural practises coming up with an architectural intervention. My thesis aims to visualise and design home and hearth which will be resilient to future disaster occurrences, to capacitate these affected communities to rebuild their lives and to enable them to be self-reliant in consideration of the rich cultural typologies preserved in the island.
