HOMES OF RESILIENCE

by Kristina Veleva

Currently London doesn’t reach an appropriate level of emergency housing. Women in seek of temporary housing run away from domestic violence and in most cases have children. This project aims to tackle this issue by providing a safe space for families while also connecting them to the community mainly by offering shared green spaces, an idea explored in Beijing, where the existing and new residents came together through shared green roofs and courtyard. Morphologically the project creates a formal response to the site and offers spaces for social connection and interaction by creating “bumping spaces”. Economically, the services provided have been carefully selected after an intensive analysis and aim to create a circular economy, working with the residents and neighbours to sustain the project. Environmentally, it is designed to last and optimise the use of resources while also using modern techniques of construction and recycled materials.
