THE CIRCULAR CENTRE

by Giada Gonzalez

The design brief proposes the construction of a reclaimed material centre. The idea responds to the ongoing gentrification of Hackney Wick and Fish Island, which by 2025 will see one third of the current building being demolished. Demolition generates large quantities of solid waste which most of the time end up in landfills. The Circular Centre aims to selectively collect the abundant waste, reprocess it or regenerate it and resell the final pieces either as construction materials or as a decorative piece of art. Working within the framework of reuse and up-cycling, the centre will show a path toward a society, that deals with waste as a resource.
