STREET LIFE

by Anna Tabacu

This development tackles the lack of cohesive housing developments and problematic home ownership situation in New Cross by introducing a re-imagination of modernist terraced housing, adapted for contemporary times, that encourages co-living and re-establishes the street as a way to bind the community. The attraction of the projects stems from the draw of a family-focused community that integrates within the neighbourhood, but breaks away from the fragmented quality of housing in New Cross. The houses are designed for families, with a minimalist approach to furnishing, featuring a series of shared spaces, assigned to two linked families, overlooking an internal street. On an urban level, the main focus of the project is the creation of streets and clear street fronts, which contribute to the proposal’s stepped approach to privacy, providing a progression of spaces ranging from public to private, paralleling the Beijing project.
