PARTHENOPE

by Lavinia Pennino

Parthenope brings to light the intrinsic and fundamental elements of Naples upon which the Neapolitan culture is funded. The scheme integrates a museum space and archive with a cruise-ship terminal which aims to bringing together culture and tourism in a new way. The archive tries to unveil the deep roots of the city’s culture through the display of ancient objects dating to Roman and Greek times, testament to the rich past of Parthenope (Naples) and the multitude of populations that have stepped on its grounds. These objects that have over time been forgotten or are particular and difficult to understand, can be studied and looked at closely, providing a one-to-one experience of history and its meanings: complex and extravagant, rich in culture and traditions. The programme develops on the port, establishing once again a connection with the sea, one on Napoli’s core elements, and redevelops the under-used industrial harbour, connecting it with its origins and evolving its current urban fabric. ‘The Game of Life’ : where objects get petrified based on their position from the joker ball. This highlights similarities to the surrounding cities of Naples that were destroyed based on their location from Mt. Vesuvius.
