THE REPOSITORY OF SUBTERRANEAN LONDON, TALES OF RAILWAYS, SEWERS AND CEMETERIES

The underground is a mysterious archive containing millions of years of history, where tunnels, sewers and cemeteries act as a type of heterotopia. As our surroundings eventually decay, decompose and become fragments of history compacted into the layers of the earth, some artefacts remain intact and can be used to decipher the tales of the past. The ground floor exhibits buried treasures excavated from the site of the Barbican. The entrance tunnel, inspired by the Greenwich footpath tunnel is designed as a beautiful artefact, especially when viewed from the sunken garden. The rammed earth basement holds a map archive that focuses on the evolution of London’s contours, and the first floor is a library dedicated to legends of the underground. Hence my project is a repository of subterranean London.
