LANDSCAPE GROWN GIN DISTILLERY

Both the buildings and the gin of this distillery grow from its terroir. The grain for the fermentation is produced onsite using an agroforestry alley cropping system. The alcoholic beverage is flavoured with a unique blend of local botanicals foraged from the landscape’s hedgerows. The scheme involves a circular economy as majority of the materials will be grown and sourced onsite and can be composted back into the soil. The hay produced will be used in the building as insulation and replaced overtime with the waste of the current yield, the timber can also be replaced as trees can be felled. The buildings are placed in three different areas of a hedgerow, transitioning between the public and semi-public areas. A series of voids and openings allow the visitors to fully experience the structure as they move through the various spaces. The journey through the landscape is a constant shift between enclosed and openness, and a delicate to heavy structure which mimics the contrast between the agroforestry systems heavy woodland and the delicacy of the grains. This is also interpreted through the lattice timber frame that wraps around all the buildings, creating a language internally through the various wall depths.
