THYLAKOID MAN & THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARBORITECTURE

by Ryan Kyberd

The premise of the project and approach taken allows for new ways of considering architecture and human beings’ relationship to nature. The narrative follows the second body, a half man, half tree being, a physical embodiment of my interests and aspirations of an urban symbiosis of tree and man. In 2020 Thylakoid constructed a post-nature monument which aimed to encourage symbiotic communication between tree and human, This acted as a catalyst for further growth of a quasi?synthetic, hybridised form of nature, the workings of a ‘living’ and truly sustainable building. Within the hybrid architecture/platanus acerifolia (London plane tree) temporal structure, Thylakoid is able to teach a nature-based curriculum which focuses on the holistic development of children within a symbiotic environment, with the hope that the synergy becomes so close that it reaches a molecular level. The resulting imagery imagines the building once fully grown circa 2220.
